Behold the solution to The Wright Challenge: Beyond the Puzzledome #2.   If you forgot the actual question, click here to see it again.

1) Don Jaime and Pepita cross together         2 minutes
2) Don Jaime returns 1 minute
3) Uncle Pio and Esteban cross together 10 minutes
4) Pipita returns with the flashlight 2 minutes
5) Pepita and Don Jaime cross together 2 minutes
TOTAL 17 minutes

Although Doctor E. said, "In general, no “tricks” are used to solve this problem. You can’t have them light a candle, have one go on the others’ shoulders, build a new bridge, or anything like that. Just solve the problem as stated." there was still quite a bit of intellectual horseplay.  For example, someone suggested all four cross at once, taking care to jump in unison so that only two people were "on" it at a time.  More than one person suggested having Don Jaime go halfway across, and using the light to "ferry" people over.

This is the definition of syllepsis:  When a single word that governs or modifies two or more others must be understood differently with respect to each of those words. This combination of parallelism and incongruity often has a witty or comical effect.   Many Doctor E participants came up with beautiful ones.  Some (Alex!) were not printable on a family-oriented web-site.  But check these out for good clean fun:

"The locker room and the players' skills stunk badly."  Denise U.
"She opened her mind and the Calculus book." Wilson's Geeks
"I lost my shoes and my sanity" Jessica S.
"Every day, Mike ran a doughnut shop and a country mile." Mike M's class
"The doctor cured the patient and the ham." David W's class
"He lost his wallet and his mind" The Big Whopping ChickenZ
"I held my breath and the door for the visitor." Nathan P.
"She is leaving for 8 days and greener pastures." Mrs. V's class
"He read my mind and the newspaper" Nashua Trig
"On his wedding day, John tied his shoes and the knot." Team 3117
"After he threw up, a fit, a baseball, a clay pot and his back out, he caught on, a cold, her drift, a train, and some Zs"  The divine Melissa P.
