Behold the solution to The Wright Challenge: Crouching Puzzle, Hidden Answer #3.   If you forgot the actual question, click here to see it again.


This question was one of the tougher problems that Doctor E has discovered... and very few people got it correct. The exact answer to the question was: , although reasonable numeric approximations were accepted. (Anything close to 0.3151)

Team PCF05 figured out how to approximate the answer using Geometer's Sketchpad. Tim K. obtained an exact answer by connecting the intersections of the arcs into a square and then solving separately for the area of the square and the leftover parts. Peter B. sent in a nice description of a solution, that we now steal verbatim:


A catachresis is a harsh metaphor involving the use of a word beyond its strict sphere. The following examples were created by Wright Challenge participants:
