It will be a hands-on class, where you get more comfortable with the SPSS statistical package and with doing statistical data analysis in general. I will have some sample datasets that illustrate different SPSS research techniques, and also show how to make a dataset from scratch. We'll go over the following commonly used commands for statistical research and apply them to example datasets: File menu Importing data from Excel spreadsheets and workbooks Data menu Define Variable Properties Split File Select Cases Transform menu Compute Recode Analyze menu Most commonly used statistical commands and options and techniques and how to interpret the results Graphs menu Most often needed Graphs and Plots and techniques such as scatterplots and Boxplots and Error Bars... Output window and how to save it and edit out the runs you do not need to save or print You can bring along any SPSS or spreadsheet or database file you have and if there is time at the end, and/or if the class is very small, I will help people with their specific research dataset issues and analysis. If there isn't enough time to answer all of your specific data analysis problems, you are welcome to make an appointment and/or walk-in for individual help with SPSS in the days and weeks after the class. I'll probably have some sort of hand-out for the class called SPSS Part I Short Course Notes, along with a related web page. The course can be somewhat tailored to the needs of the students, so feel free to let me know of any specific questions you have when you register or at any time. Mark
